KICK addresses several problems namely:

  • Unemployment amongst young people – both women and men
  • Despair and hopelessness amongst the youth
  • Lack of income and pervasive poverty
  • Environmental challenges e.g. waste, water hyacinth.

In response KICK’s focus is:

  • Employability: Especially by youth and women through self-employment as well as employment.
  • Resources: Harnessing Africa’s huge resources towards creating wealth for its people
  • Conservation:Tackling climate change and conserving Africa’s rich biodiversity, environment and resources for future generations.

KICK works directly with 150 young women and men and a further 300 indirectly.

Model

KICK Service provision is based on a Value Chain Model that provides access to domestic and export markets. It works with independent artisans who own their own informal micro enterprises to design and develop products that are then sold to its business customers in domestic and export markets. These customers then sell the products to other businesses or to individual customers through an array of retail outlets. KICK also services orders from organisations, corporations and individuals. These are based on orders or bought from its shop in Dunga Beach in Kisumu.

KICK’s products are unique meaning that young women and men who want to work with KICK have to be trained. This is done either by leveraging an apprenticeship system where existing artisans train new artisans or through workshops organised by KICK. With these skills, they can products that can service KICK orders as well as enable them serve other customers.
